Crayola Neon Crayons: What's Inside the Box

I love cute little boxes of Crayola crayons and the 8 count Crayola Neon crayons are no exception.  I was a little surprised when I opened the the box and found sky blue, shamrock, melon and carnation pink in the box, they did not seem neon to me. I even went to Walgreens this week to make sure they were really the colors that were supposed to be in the box.  The colors in the other neon 8 count boxes were atomic tangerine, *blizzard blue, laser lemon, outrageous orange, *razzle dazzle rose, shocking pink, *screamin green, *wild watermelon.  Some of the missing colors in this set are retired, some are not, maybe the other colors were not as popular but very similar in color.

The other box in this post is the first time Crayola made an 8 count Neon Crayola crayon box in 1994. Crayola also released an 8 and 16 count regular sized Neon box at the time too.

Neon colors have always shared color names with the fluorescent crayons. It is just another way to market the crayons.
Color Information
The neon crayons from 1994 were definitely the better set of neon crayons. Who replaces blizzard blue with sky blue, screamin' green with shamrock and razzle dazzle rose with carnation pink. Those colors do not even say neon to me.

  1. Before Crayola introduced fluorescent colors in the early 1970s, there were colors that displayed some degree of fluorescence under ultra-violet light, although never comparable to the real fluorescents. Yellow-Orange was always the strongest, but Carnation Pink was one too.
